Chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers` Association Alex Wurz believes that Formula 1 can cope with the increase in the number of races.
In recent years, F1 has increasingly talked about expanding the calendar. Series President Stefano Domenicali even admitted that in the future there will be 30 stages per season.
Wurz compared the situation to the American NASCAR series, which has 38 races per season.
We just recently had a meeting of the Association and NASCAR drivers. They asked for help in collaborating with organizations that support pilots - and we asked them about the workload during the season.
Actually, the main problem for F1 in terms of expanding the calendar is the mindset of the fans and the culture of the paddock as a whole. If we go down this path, it will take time to adapt. What is normal for NASCAR drivers, teams and fans would be considered overkill in the F1 world.
To be honest, I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I can see NASCAR handling a lot more races without too much trouble. On the other hand, perhaps we will overload, oversaturate our audience. So here it is necessary to maintain a balance between business needs and market reaction. And I think Liberty Media and Stefano are doing a great job with that.
Perhaps the load on pilots on our site is secondary and equal to the same as what all personnel experience. And since NASCAR has overcome human error, we must do the same if we are going to increase the number of races, " Wurtz said.
